Chaos and Charm: Exploring the Unique Mae Klong Railway Market

Mae Klong Railway Market, also known as Hoop Rom Market, is a local market located in Samut Songkhram Province, often referred to as the "life-risking" market. This market is considered one of the most amazing attractions in the province. Stretching over a 100-meter length, it is situated by the railway near Mae Klong Railway Station in Mueng District, Samut Songkhram Province. The market serves as a typical fresh market where you can find a variety of goods, including seafood, vegetables, fruits, fresh and dried foods, meats, and various miscellaneous items. Mae Klong Railway Market operates from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.   What makes this market unique is its proximity to the Mae Klong-Ban Laem railway, a short railway line running between Mahachai and Mae Klong. The market's stalls are positioned right by the railway, and vendors use parasols or canvas to shield themselves from the sun. These structures extend onto the railway path where visitors walk and shop.   When a train approaches, chaos ensues: vendors hastily close their parasols and canvas and remove any goods that might obstruct the oncoming train, which passes through at a considerable speed. Once the train has safely passed, the vendors reopen their parasols, and goods are returned to their usual spots next to the railroad. This unique practice has earned the market its name, "Hoop Rom," which means "umbrella/parasol-closing" market.   While this routine is customary for vendors and locals, it provides an exciting and enjoyable spectacle for tourists during each visit. The parasol-closing event occurs eight times a day, aligning with the train departures from Mahachai to Mae Klong and the return trips.   Here are the train schedules: - Trains arrive at Mae Klong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m., and 5.40 p.m. - Trains depart from Mae Klong Station at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m., and 3.30 p.m.   To reach Mae Klong Railway Market by car, take the Thonburi-Pak Tho route until you reach the 63rd kilometer. Stay in the left lane and enter the elevated highway leading to the center of Samut Songkhram. Pass the first traffic light and the market. At the second traffic light, turn right and cross over the railway to arrive at Mae Klong Railway Market. If you prefer to travel by train, start at Wonwian Yai Railway Station and disembark at Mahachai Station. Take a ferry to the Tha Chalom side and catch a train from Ban Laem Station to Mae Klong, which is the last station on the line.
